Description: “Hospital extensions: four-storey nurses home and training school” details approval for the erection of a four-storey nurses home and training school at Gosford District Hospital. Architects Leighton Irwin & Co. will prepare working instructions for the building which will house 30 nurses. Approval has also been obtained to renovate an old section of the hospital to include the essential services of pathology and physiotherapy. Extensive renovations have been approved to modernise existing wards to bring them into line with the £500,000 extensions nearing completion. Renovations planned include a complete re-wire of the hospital to include over bed lighting, ward lighting, night lighting and a three station radio system to each bed. A heating system will be installed in all wards, pan rooms renovated, fly screens installed and interior and exterior painting carried out. The estimated cost of these approvals is £100,000. The Children’s Ward will double in size to treat 16 children. Extra office accommodation will be provided along with a medical records room containing compactus units. In addition to these approvals the Board has accepted a tender to construct a Medical Superintendent’s residence on hospital grounds at cost of more than £8,000. The first stage of the redevelopment programme is nearing completion and will include a three-storey ward block with direct access to existing hospital wards, kitchen, laundry and boiler house.
